The research-design arm of IJH. Pilot Ready core instruments. Individual and small-group protocols. A multi-site research program. Testing results flow upward to adjust earlier confidence ratings.
Vol 4 proposes a way to test all this in real life. If the first three volumes change, then of course, the testing needs to adapt. This volume has grown considerably from its origins as a draft and now offers a structured testing scaffolding — including individual and small group protocols, assessment instruments, and a formal research program design. It remains explicitly dependent on Volumes 1–3 and should be revised if those volumes change significantly.
Volume 4 is the research-design arm of the Intentional Journey of the Heart. Where Volumes 1–3 develop the claims — what the spiritual life appears to operate by — and Volume 5 provides the formation documents and protocols that put those claims into practice, Volume 4 asks the next question: how would we know if the claims are actually true? It proposes the instruments, the small-group and individual protocols, and the multi-site research design that could put the LotS framework to a genuine test.
